FLOAT COMIXWARE FAQ

GENERAL Q & A

What exactly is this?
Float Comixware is an interactive storytelling application that not only offers you a rich reading experience of multimedia contents, but also allows you to compose and tell your own stories by using the same story building materials of the original presentation.

How do I compose my own stories with Comixware?
Like a screen writer and a film editor, you can arrange and compose your scenes in a timeline in any order you like and of any length you desire. You can further compose each scene by adding composition elements to it and adjusting their on screen variables (sizes, angle, positions, colors and duration). These elements include dialogue balloons, animated casts, still props, SFX, and/or even your own composition assets. In addition, you can select a soundtrack for your movie from a list of theme music or from your own music collections. The possibility is infinite.

Can I make my own feature length movies from Comixware?
Yes, you can make up any length of movies you'd like using the supplied story building materials and/or your own story assets.

What kind of story building materials come with Comixware?
Initially, it comes with 100 story movie clips (scenes that each has animation and sound built-in), 22 background movie clips (both animated and still pictures for you to build your scene from the ground up), 16 speech balloons of various shapes and purposes, 22 animated casts, 18 static props, 19 sound effect objects and 7 thematic soundtracks. This library of story building materials can be expanded and upgraded later when we add more contents to our collection.

Are you sure Comixware can make feature length movies?
There's no restriction on how many times you can use the same clip in your timeline and neither is there limit on the infinite ways you could do with each scene. And the timeline has no preset length limit so that your story could literally go on forever. Not to mention that you can use your own media assets (video, animation, photos and almost any kind of still graphics) in combination with Comixware's built-in assets for creating totally customized movie. Yes, Comixware is capable of making a feature length (or any length) of movie. The limit is only in one's imagination.

Can I save a copy of my masterpiece to share with friends?
Yes, you can save a copy of your work to your computer for further editing or for your own viewing purpose. You can also share your masterpiece with your friends and the rest of the world by posting it in our gallery on the Internet.

What are the minimum system requirements for Comixware?
For bringing beautiful graphics and powerful tools together, needless to say this requires serious CPU power. Though in no way it means that Comixware won't run on a lesser system, the minimum setup we suggest is as follow:

Windows

- 500Mhz Pentium III processor.
- A graphic card with 16MB or more of VRAM.
- 64MB of physical RAM.
- 100MB of available disk space.
- 32-bit color monitor capable of 800 x 600 resolution.
- Windows compatible sound card.
- Windows 95, 98, NT4, 2000, ME and XP operating systems.
- QuickTime 6 or greater.
- DirectX 7.0 or greater.
- An Internet connection.

Macintosh

- G3 400Mhz PowerPC processor.
- A graphic card with 16MB or more of VRAM.
- 64MB of physical RAM.
- 100MB of available disk space.
- 32-bit color monitor capable of 800x600 resolution.
- MAC OS X and Classic (8.x to 9.x).
- QuickTime 6 or greater.
- Open GL 1.1.2 or greater.
- An Internet connection.

Please bear in mind that the above are indeed 'minimum' systems. The faster your computer is the better Comixware performs.

Is this a 'serious' program beyond pretty interface?
Oh yeah, most definitely. Don't be fooled by the 'good' look and the deceivingly ease of use of Comixware. Under the skin, every muscle is wired for serious functionality and performance. We bet you don't see anything out there quite like Comixware that dynamically assembles and disassembles MULTI-MEDIA presentation on-the-fly, both at the scene and at the timeline level. Effortless GUI? Yes, we are guilty of that. But isn't that what a good software program supposed to be?

Why should I care about yet another DV editing tool?
Because it is NOT just another DV editing tool, it's MUCH more. It's a seamless storytelling platform that not only delivers an original multimedia presentation to the user but also allows user to reenact the presentation with his/her own interpretation and creativity. Comixware is not aiming to replace your other DV editing softwares (though it actually does a few tricks better than anyone else). Use your favorite authoring tools to do whatever you usually do with traditional DV contents. But if you want your creation to be a live entity that invites conversation and interactivity, use Comixware.

What is it really?
It's a new way of storytelling, a seamless platform that bridges two previously separated experiences of human aesthetics: that of creativity and that of appreciative enactment. You get it when you are able to think it outside of the box.

HOW TO USE

What is the basic operation of Compose?
Conceptually, there are 2 types of editing in Compose section (see sample screen shot). One is 'timeline' related called "Timeline Editing" and the other is individual 'scene' related called "Scene Composition". You edit your movie in a 'Timeline' strip, and you compose your scene on a 'Compose' stage. In each mode you work with different sets of editing assets: Timeline Assets for timeline editing and Scene Assets for scene composition. Both assets are stored in the same Asset Bin but are contextually presented depending on the mode it's in. The Timeline Assets comprise of movie clips and music of various kinds. The Scene Assets comprise of compositional 'objects' of various natures.

How do I edit my timeline?
You drag thumbnails (clips) from Asset bin (on the left) and drop them into Timeline strip (at the bottom) to build your movie. You then drag-n-drop your thumbnail (scenes) around within the Timeline to arrange their order. In addition, you may double click on a scene from timeline to go to "Scene Composition" mode to further customize that scene (see sample screen shot).

Can I do insert editing to my movie?
Yes. To insert, you simply drag a clip (from Asset bin) or a selection of scene(s) (from Timeline strip) and drop it between 2 bordered scenes where you want your insert to be. (You'll see an insertion mark lit up when you hover your "drag" over the insertion spot.)

How do I go to Scene Composition mode?
Your scene must be already in the timeline strip for you to initiate its scene composition mode. There are 2 ways for you to switch to scene composition from timeline editing mode:

- Double click a thumbnail in your timeline to go to its Scene Composition mode.

- Or if your scene is in the Preview window, simply click on the rollover PREVIEW button on top of the Preview window (it says 'COMPOSE SCENE' when you roll your mouse over it).

What do I do with Compose stage?
In Scene Composition mode you are presented with a larger Preview/Compose stage and a Scene Assets bin (on the left). You simply drag assets from the bin to your stage to arrange and adjust them any way you want (see sample screen shot). Each object comes with a bounding box that has controls for you to manipulate its size, position, rotation, text and color (see sample screen shot). You can also set the object's on-screen duration by adjusting its in and out marks on a frame track (at the bottom of the stage). Once you're done with a composition, press Record button to register your work to the timeline. Now when you play your movie back all the dialog, animation, and SFX you added to your scene will be there playing along with other scenes in your timeline. BTW, don't forget to check other sub-tags of Scene asset bin. They contain many more objects for you to use in your scene composition.

Can I crop or extend the length of a scene?
Yes, you can make any scene longer or shorter with Scene Length control in Scene Composition mode. You simply type in a new 'total' frame number (in Frame Display window) and hit 'Enter' key, a pop-up menu will prompt you to define where the crop or addition to be applied: to the end, to the front or to make cycle of the movie clip. Once a command is selected the scene length will be changed accordingly.

How do I go back to timeline editing?
To switch back to Timeline Editing from Scene Composition mode, you simply click on the rollover "EDIT TIMELINE" button at the top of Compose window.

Can I copy and paste scenes or objects?
Definitely, copy and paste can be performed both in Timeline strip and on Compose stage. To access copy-n-paste commands, you simply right-mouse-click (or 'control' click for Mac) on the selected scene(s) or compositional object(s). This will bring up a contextual menu where copy-n-paste and other productivity commands reside.

Where are my music selections?

They are stored in the Music Panel. This normally concealed panel can be brought up by double clicking the "sound" symbol on the far right of the Timeline. It contains 2 tabs of music spaces: one is for the "Theme" music selection and the other is for user's own music selection. You can preview the music by clicking on the sound symbol at the right of each track. Only one music track can be selected at a time, and is used for the duration of an entire movie.

How do I create my own assets?
Indeed this is the most powerful feature of Comixware. Anyone with even a slightest creative inclination should not overlook this feature.

- For adding your personal MP3 library please read HERE.
- For creating your own User BG clips please read HERE.
- For creating your User Composition Objects please read HERE.

How do I save or share the movie I created?
To save a copy of your (Timeline) movie, you go to SAVE section and enter a name for your movie and click "SAVE". Now your movie is saved to your "user" folder for later retrieving or further editing. If you feel that your movie is particularly interesting, clever or funny, you can share your masterpiece with other users by posting it to Comixware Gallery on the Internet. There is also a feature called Linked URL designed specially for you to share personal assets with others on the Internet. In addition you can use Comixware's built in encryption scheme to password protect your Gallery movie for sharing contents "privately" with designated friends and family only.
